Legal Aid Online is accessed via your browser and you don't need to download any extra software to use it.
The LAOL hub is designed to keep you up to date with any changes and news, and offer support and guidance to the people using our online service.
The first time you access Legal Aid Online the terms and conditions will be displayed for you to read and accept before you can complete the login process.
If your firm has just registered to carry out criminal, civil or children's legal aid work, and you are the firm administrator, the LAOL Helpdesk will email your username and password for Legal Aid Online. If your firm is already registered your firm administrator will be able to provide you with login details.
Before you login to LAOL there are learning materials available so you can familiarise yourself with layout of the system. You should check out the guidance on how to submit applications and accounts as well as the information on other aspects of LAOL. These contain screenshots and basic information that will provide an overview of some of the screens you will be presented with when using the system.
If you have any further training needs you can arrange a webinar or contact us at any point with a query.
If you require any technical assistance getting started with Legal Aid Online, or encounter any technical issues when using the system, please contact the LAOL Helpdesk on 0131 240 2037 or by emailing email@example.com
The system is available 24/7 except Sunday evening between 10pm and 11pm when it is offline to allow a back-up to take place. The system will also be unavailable for scheduled updates and maintenance. This will be advertised with a message on the login page and we will aim to give at least 24 hours notice of any scheduled downtime.
Unscheduled downtime is when there is a system failure and access is no longer possible. In such circumstances we aim to have the system up and running in a maximum of 2 hours.
Device hardware: To use Legal Aid Online, you can use a PC, laptop, Apple Mac or netbook with internet access. We are also currently testing the system for use with tablet devices such as iPads.
Device software: Operating systems - We do not recommend any specific operating system for the online system but we do recommend that your operating system is reasonably up to date.
Browsers - Of more importance is the type of browser you use. The current system has been tested using Windows Internet Explorer IE11 and Firefox 46. We have also recently started testing under Safari and Google Chrome. Again in order to take full advantage of the improving features of the online system we recommend that you keep your browser reasonably up to date.

Creating additional Legal Aid Online administrators
You are allowed more than one firm administrator on Legal Aid Online if you decide it is necessary due to workload or office requirements. LAOL Administrators create and remove users, ensure users have access to relevant online training modules and administer passwords so we recommend you limit their number as a security measure.
To have an additional administrator set up, please use the option on our Contact Us page. Your current firm administrator can edit their login access if you decide to do this.
