Getting started and technical information
It’s quick and easy. You don’t need any extra software or downloads - just internet access.
See the technical requirements section below for more details.
Firstly, you should choose someone to be your firm or branch administrator. They will be responsible for administering the online users for your firm, including:
- creating and removing users for the firm
- ensuring all users have access to, and can learn from, the relevant online training package modules
- administering passwords.
Your firm administrator and others accessing the system will need to do the full training from our online learning pack before starting to use the system. This is supported with a training telephone helpline.
You may have more than one firm administrator, but we recommend you limit the number as a security measure.
To get set up to use this service , pass us the details below by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Your firm's contact details - name of your firm, firm code, address and office telephone number
Firm administrator - name of your firm administrator, what is their role or post, a note of their e-mail address and solicitor's code if relevant.
You should also read the terms and conditions for Legal Aid Online.
Which type of case does your firm offer - A&A, Civil or Criminal?
Once we have all of the above details, we will:
- set up your firm to use Legal Aid Online
- get in touch with your firm administrator, with all the login details
- give you instructions on how to start using our online learning pack
Device hardware: To use Legal Aid Online, you can use a PC, laptop, Apple Mac or netbook with internet access. We are also currently testing the system for use with tablet devices such as iPads.
Device software: Operating systems - We do not recommend any specific operating system for the online system but we do recommend that your operating system is reasonably up to date.
Browsers - Of more importance is the type of browser you use. The current system has been tested using Windows Internet Explorer IE11 and Firefox 46. We have also recently started testing under Safari and Google Chrome. Again in order to take full advantage of the improving features of the online system we recommend that you keep your browser reasonably up to date.
Upgrading your browser - please note that Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported. To upgrade to a supported version, please download any of the following browsers:
- Internet Explorer 9 – Only supported on Windows 7 and above with TLSv1.2 enabled
- Internet Explorer 11 - latest and also fastest version available of Internet Explorer
- Firefox v27 and above - good for all platforms
- Chrome v30 and above - good for all platforms
- Safari v7 and above – good for all platforms
Connection to the internet - You must have a connection to the internet. We recommend that you have at least a 2Mb broadband connection to fully utilise the system.
System availability - The system is available 24/7 except Sunday evening between 10pm and 11pm when it is offline to allow back-up to take place. The system will also be unavailable for scheduled updates and maintenance. Scheduled downtime will be advertised with a message on the Log-In page. We will aim to give at least 24 hours notice of any scheduled downtime. Unscheduled downtime is when there is a system failure and access is no longer possible. In such circumstances we aim to have the system up and running in a maximum of 2 hours.
