Agents' video links
We are leading the Scottish Government's Justice Digital strategy to make greater use of video links for solicitors’ advice to:
- clients in prison
- suspects in police stations
- suitable court proceedings
The aim is to have modern, user-focused justice systems that use digital technology to deliver simple, fast and effective justice at best cost while reducing the need for unnecessary travel.
It will also reduce the need for prisoners to be transferred between prisons and courts for court hearings.
Prison Video Links
Following a successful pilot, prison video links are now available for solicitors to use for conducting secure meetings with their clients in prison.
The prison video links enable solicitors to conduct a meeting with their client in prison from their office using a PC or tablet.
In accordance with the Prisons Rules (Scotland) 2011, visits by video link are conducted in the same way as physical visits, private and ‘out of hearing’ but within ‘sight’.
The key benefits of the video link system are:
Less time spent travelling and waiting at prisons
Can have meetings with clients located in different prisons on the same day
A visit by video link can be conducted from a desktop with a webcam or a tablet device
Increases productivity – instead of being stuck in traffic or waiting at prison you can carry out other business
Reduction in vehicular emissions and the carbon impact of legal aid expenditure.
The prisons currently set up for agents visits by video link are:
