Hardware

To use Legal Aid Online, you do not have to have any significant disc space and any computer which has the capacity to run the software referred to later in these notes should be suitable.

Operating system

For Windows-based platform users, we recommend Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional/Home Edition. As Windows 95/98 and Windows NT are no longer supported by Microsoft, we do not recommend using them for Legal Aid Online. So far as we know, you should not have any particular problems using Legal Aid Online under Windows Vista.

Alternatively, you may be able to use Open Source operating systems such as Linux although we cannot guarantee how they will work with Legal Aid Online.

Similarly, you should be able to use Apple Mac computers and the Mac operating system, but we cannot guarantee how successfully they will work with Legal Aid Online.

For all operating systems, we recommend you keep them up to date – for example, with patches and security updates, installed as soon as they become available in order to ensure you keep your systems secure.

Browser software

You need to instal a compatible browser on your computer.

MS Internet Explorer 6.0 or above is recommended for those operating on a Windows platform.

Connection to the internet

You must have a connection to the internet. While a basic dial-up or ISDN connection is enough for light or occasional use, you may find its slow speed frustrating. For most users a broadband connection is recommended, as it will improve access speeds.

Proxy server

Some networks may access the internet through a proxy server. Depending on the server's configuration, you may have to bypass the proxy rules in order for Legal Aid Online to work. This can be tested easily by using a laptop to access Legal Aid Online in the office and then repeating the exercise using a broadband connection elsewhere. A noticeable improvement in performance at home would indicate a "bottleneck", caused by proxy server rules or another network problem, within the office area. If so, you’ll have to consult with your IT support provider; although the Board’s IT support staff may be able to assist by telephone.
