Finding a legal aid solicitor

The simplest way to find a legal aid firm of solicitors, is to use our find my nearest online search by town, postcode, or name of solicitor firm.

Registers of solicitors' firms

Firms of solicitors who undertake legal assistance work have to be registered with the Board. You can view listings of registered firms in table format (as Adobe Acrobat pdf):

• Criminal Legal Assistance Register (as at 31 August 2010) - this shows solicitors registered to undertake criminal legal assistance at the address of their firm’s main office.
  
  
• Civil Legal Assistance Register (as at 31 August 2010) - for firms who carry out civil legal assistance

You can use the Find facility in Acrobat to search the listings. Although a firm is registered for legal aid work, they may not be taking on new client cases. You can use our online find my nearest search or call our Legal Aid Helpline on 0845 122 8686 if you are finding it difficult to find a legal aid solicitor.

Other useful information

• In order to carry out criminal legal assistance work, solicitors must show that they comply with the Code of practice in relation to criminal legal assistance and be registered with the Board.
