Civil Legal Assistance Office - Highland and Islands

The Civil Legal Assistance Office - Highland and Islands is a legal service developed by the Scottish Legal Aid Board to help with the problems of unmet legal need for clients in the Highlands and Islands eligible for civil legal assistance.

The service uses five full-time solicitors employed by the Scottish Legal Aid Board to provide a range of legal services. The solicitors work from an office based in Inverness, but serve the areas of Highland, Moray, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland.

The office used to be called the Highland and Islands Part V Service.

For more information on the service, read our leaflet (which is in pdf format).

Who can use the service?

If you live in these Highlands and Islands areas and you are having difficulties finding legal help or the services of a solicitor then the Civil Legal Assistance Office may be able to help you.  You must also be eligible for civil legal assistance (the service does not deal with cases under criminal legal aid.)

What happens if there is no solicitor in private practice able to act for me?

If no solicitor in private practice in these Highlands and Islands areas can act for you under legal aid, and you are eligible for civil legal assistance, then the Civil Legal Assistance Office may be able to represent you if they have the capacity to do so in terms of their workload and the case is of a type which the service handles.

How do I contact the Civil Legal Assistance Office?

If you are unable to get a private solicitor, you can contact the service by telephone or email - see below for the contact details. We will consider your case and circumstances, which will include seeing if it is possible to refer you to a solicitor in private practice.

Another way to find out what we may be able to provide is through your local Citizens Advice Bureau.  We have a close link with all CABx in the Highlands and Islands, and they are familiar with helping people wanting to find out about eligibility for legal aid and how our service operates, and a CAB adviser can assist in contacting us on your behalf.
